LUDHIANA: Illegal hoarding, which can be seen installed at different parts of the city, are also putting the lives of commuters in danger.
On Saturday, an accident took place at flyover over Gill Canal bridge wherein a biker went down after an illegal hoarding came in his way. While the biker suffered injuries, no casualty was reported from the spot.
Illegal hoardings can be spotted at different parts of the city and alongside roads that sometimes block view of the drivers resulting in accidents.
However, the authorities are having blind eye towards the situation due to political pressure. As elections are approaching, Ludhiana sky is covered with illegal hoardings but even after several complaints by the residents nothing has been done in this regard. One of the eyewitnesses in Saturday's accident Jagpreet Brar, a resident of Pakhowal road, said he was on his way to Chandigarh and as he reached the Southern Bypass flyover over Gill Road canal bridge, the biker moving in front of him crashed into a hoarding that had got uprooted.
Brar added that it was fortunate that the biker didn't suffer any major injuries but the authorities should keep a check on the situation and no illegal hoardings should be allowed to come up near road sides. "These don't just distract the commuters, but also pose danger to their lives," he said.
Meanwhile outgoing MC commissioner Ghanshyam Thori, who has been transferred, said it is a serious matter and he would direct the officials to investigate it.
